Gen. Raymond Johns Jr. took the helm of the Air Force’s largest major command Friday, the day after its busiest day in history when cargo planes and air refueling tankers flew more than 1,030 sorties around the world.

Johns took command of the U.S. Air Force’s Air Mobility Command in the same ceremony in which his predecessor, Gen. Arthur Lichte, retired after 38 years in the Air Force.

Lichte handed the command flag over with the usual melancholy of an outgoing commander, symbolically transferring to Johns the more than 133,500 airmenand 1,200 airplanes within Air Mobility Command.
