Injured Haskell Limited In Loss

BENTONVILLE Bentonville running back Courtney Haskell was in no mood to talk late Friday night. He didn’t feel all that great carrying the football, either.
Battling a sore hip, Haskell didn’t show the type of explosiveness that had made him the 7A-West Conference’s leading rusher. He gained only 23 yards on eight carries and watched as Bentonville came up short in a 27-24 loss to Fort Smith Southside in Tiger Stadium.
“He’s been hurt. He got hurt in the (Springdale) Har-Ber game. Obviously it was easy to tell,” Bentonville coach Barry Lunney said. “He’s got some kind of hip injury.
“We thought he’d be (limited). We thought he could be 80 percent, but he probably was only about 60 percent.”
With Haskell feeling sore, fellow senior Shane Boedeker assumed the bulk of the carries for Bentonville, rushing 19 times for 92 yards. He showed his power while breaking through the line of scrimmage, but the Tigers missed Haskell’s big-play ability.
Haskell had only four carries for 6 yards in the second half, and all but two of his eight rushes went for 2 yards or less. His biggest play came when he returned a kickoff 55 yards in the final seconds of the third quarter.
Haskell declined to comment following his final game at Bentonville.
“Courtney was hurt. He was a little sore during practice all week, so I kind of took the load,” Boedeker said. “It wasn’t originally supposed to be mostly me; it was supposed to be 50-50. But I guess Courtney was just hurt.”
Heading into Friday, Haskell had rushed for 1,219 yards and 19 touchdowns this season. But he didn’t look like the same explosive running back while gaining only 17 yards on four carries in the first half.
That left Boedeker to take over the running game.
“I was very happy with how many carries I got,” Boedeker said. “A win would’ve been nice with the carries.”
