Retired Educator Funds Five Scholarships At UA

Posted: November 20, 2009 at 5:18 a.m.

A Fayetteville man recently donated $250,000 in support of scholarships at the University of Arkansas.

John H. Morris, who spent his career teaching history at Wharton Community College near Houston, Texas, and retired from teaching in 2008 after a part-time stint at Northwest Arkansas Community College, has funded five Access Arkansas scholarships. Morris received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Arkansas in 1959 and his master’s degree in 1969.

The scholarships will be given through the J. William Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Education and Health Professions and the Sam M. Walton College of Business. They are designed to help students who struggle to meet the financial demands of higher education.

The scholarships are:

w The John Howard Morris Access Arkansas Endowed Scholarship in History

w The John Howard Morris Access Arkansas Endowed Scholarship in Piano

w The Emmett Lee Morris Access Arkansas Endowed Scholarship in Education, named for Morris’ grandfather

w The Gladys Houser Morris Access Arkansas Endowed Scholarship in Nursing, named for Morris’ mother

w The Russell Anthony Boone Access Arkansas Endowed Scholarship in Finance, named for a close friend and former student

“I want to help students who don’t necessarily qualify academically for the top scholarships — I was a ‘B’ student myself — but who are still worthy of a great education and rely on financial assistance to get through,” Morris said.
