VARSITY BOYS

Van Buren 53, Springdale High 49

VAN BUREN — Despite digging a huge first-quarter hole for itself, Van Buren found a way to knock off Springdale High in the Pointers’ home basketball opener.

The Bulldogs held a 14-3 lead, but an off-shooting night by standout Shelton Baird and the inside presence of Van Buren’s Hooper Vint was enough for the Pointers to escape with the win.

Trailing by 11 points early in the game, the Pointers (1-0) answered with a 17-0 run and never trailed after that point. Deven Goodwin and Tyler Spoon each hit 3-pointers to start the run, then Vint converted a three-point play as Van Buren closed the first quarter trailing by just two.

Vint finished with 17 points while White added 10. Baird led all players with 23 points while Evans finished with 10 for Springdale.
