FAYETTEVILLE Arkansas women’s cross country coach Lance Harter has been left with an unusual feeling.
It’s just the second time in Harter’s 31 years of coaching — including 20 at Arkansas — his team failed to qualify for NCAA Championships. The Razorbacks finished third at the South Central Regional over the weekend and failed to receive an at-large bid.
“It was one of those deals, close, oh so close,” Harter said. “It’s something of an uneasy feeling. I’m not sure how the whole thing operates ... but we do have two individuals who will carry the flag for Arkansas.”
Freshman Allyssa Allison and junior Miranda Walker will compete as individuals at the NCAA meet Monday.
Harter believes with 275 runners in Monday’s race, the two Arkansas runners should be happy to finish among the top 100.
“That would be a major victory,” Harter said. “If they can get anything better than that, it’s icing on the cake.”
New Addition
The Arkansas gymnastics team signed four athletes for next year earlier this week, but coaches Rene and Mark Cook also added one for this season.
Freshman Natalie Bohonsky of Plano, Texas, will enroll in January and could compete for the Razorbacks in their first competition against Arizona in Barnhill Arena on Jan. 9, Rene Cook said.
“We’ve been talking with her coach at home, making sure she’s ready when she comes,” Rene Cook said. “We’re not sure she’ll be in the lineup in the first competition, but we’re certainly putting that expectation on her.”
Swimming, Diving Team Shorthanded
Arkansas sophomore diver Lianna Bugslag will not compete in the Purdue Invitational over the weekend after suffering an injury in training earlier this week, coach Jeff Poppell said Wednesday.
“She may have fractured her wrist,” Poppell said.
That will be a big loss for Razorbacks this weekend.
“We probably give up 40 points in diving for each of the events ... that’s 120 points, which is pretty substantial,” Poppell said.
