Walter Kus
SPRINGDALE — Walter Anthony Kus, 92, of Springdale died Nov. 16, 2009, at the Fayetteville Veterans Home in Fayetteville. He was born June 7, 1917, in Chicago.
He served in the Army during World War II and had worked in a shoe repair shop in Chicago.
Survivors include his wife, Patricia; four stepsons; a stepdaughter; fi ve grandchildren; five great-grandchildren.
Services will be announced at a later date.
Cremation arrangements are by Memorial Funeral Home.
Colman Clough
WEST FORK — Colman A. Clough, 89, of West Fork died Tuesday, Nov. 17, 2009, at Washington Regional Medical Center.
He was born Oct. 17, 1920, in Wilson, Okla., the son of Julian and Corine Petty Clough. He was a retired truck driver and a member of the West Fork Assembly of God Church.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Louise Clough; a son, Daniel Clough and his wife, Mary Beth, of Siloam Springs; three daughters, Rebecca Anderson and her husband, Gary, of Reno, Nev., Rachel Oaks and her husband, Terry, of Centerton, and Ruth Thomas of West Fork; a brother, Harold Clough of Odessa, Texas; 13 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.
Funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 21, 2009, at Moore’s Chapel. Officiating will be the Rev. Billy Byrd.
Burial will be at Summers Cemetery in Lincoln.
Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at Moore’s Chapel.

R.C. ‘Courtie’
Conley
OVERLAND PARK, Kan. — The Greatest Generation, who sacrificed so much for our freedom, has lost another member from its ranks. R.C. “Courtie” Conley, age 90, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 17, 2009.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Tena Mae; daughters, Nancy Conley of Little Rock and Susan Conley and her partner, Jean Matchett, of Little Rock; and his son, Mike Conley and wife, Ronna, of Dallas.
Visitation will be today from 6 to 8 p.m. at McGilley & Hoge Chapel, 8024 Santa Fe Drive., in Overland Park, Kan. He will be laid to rest in Bluff Cemetery in Springdale in a graveside service scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 21, at 2 p.m.
Born and raised in Springdale, Courtie graduated from Springdale High School and was a member of the high school band. He attended the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville and was a member of the marching band. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army Air Force, achieving the rank of fi rst lieutenant. During 1944-1945, he fl ew the “Hump,” piloting C-46 cargo planes on the dangerous air route across the Himalayas between Chabua, India, and Kunming, China, for which he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal. Following the war, he returned to Springdale, eventually opening a flying service at the airport. Later, he served as a pilot for Jones Truck Lines in Springdale and Skelly Oil in Kansas City. After that he served as a pilot and later as chief pilot for Panhandle Eastern Pipeline Co. in Kansas City, retiring in 1983 as Manager of Aviation.
Devoted to the Arkansas Razorbacks and his dog, Asta, Courtie Conley will be missed by all those who loved him.

Schmieding
SPRINGDALE — Lawrence H. Schmieding died Monday, Nov. 16, 2009, at Circle of Life Hospice in Springdale. He was born Oct. 6, 1920, in Lincoln, Neb., to August Henry and Martha Beckman Schmieding.
Lawrence owned and operated Schmieding Produce. He was a veteran of World War II serving in the U.S. Army. He founded the Schmieding Center for Seniors. He was a member of the Springdale Country Club and the Elks Club. He was a honorary member of the Board of Directors of ILC in New York. He was a member of the Salem Lutheran Church in Springdale.
Survivors include his wife, Helen Schmieding of the home; one son, Rick Sharpe and wife, Ellina, of Springdale; one daughter, Pamela English and husband, Marty, of Springdale; nine grandchildren; and three great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be Saturday, Nov. 21, 2009, at 1 p.m. at Salem Lutheran Church in Springdale with Pastor Mark Q.L. Louderback oft ciating. Burial will be in the Bluff Cemetery.
Visitation will be on Friday from 5 to 7 p.m. at Sisco Funeral Chapel of Springdale.
Pallbearers will be Kyle Underwood, Darin Montgomery, Lance Taylor, Larry Sipes, Kendal Douthit, John Lauber, Gary Neil and Bob Rokeby. Honorary pallbearers will be V.H. Taylor, Carl Richardson, Fred Smith, Dorman Delp, John Coan, Dean Williams, Al Partain, Gary Owens, Gene George, Sandy Boone, Walter Turnbow and Lonnie Watson.

Robert Wyckoff
FAYETTEVILLE — Robert Bryce Wyckoff, 85, of Fayetteville died Tuesday, Nov. 17, 2009, at his home.
He was born May 31, 1924, in Thedford, Neb., to William Fay and Helen Engel Wyckoff .
He graduated from the University of Missouri with a master’s degree in social work, and subsequently was a counselor with the St. Louis Prisoner’s Aid Society; adult probation supervisor with Ramsey County Court Services in St. Paul, Minn.; and director of adult probation, municipal court probation and family court services for Hennepin County Department of Court Services, Minneapolis. He retired to Fayetteville in 1984 and served as chair of the first Washington County Criminal Justice Commission.
Her served four years with the Army Air Corps in World War II and was a Unitarian.
He is survived by his wife, Marion Wyckoff of the home; three children, Mark Wyckoff and wife Kim of West Fork, Ann Gougebas and husband John of Minnetonka, Minn., and David Wyckoff of Fayetteville; four grandchildren, Hilary Wyckoff of Fayetteville, Patrick Wyckoff of West Fork, and Theo and Alec Gougebas of Minnetonka, Minn.
Memorials may be made to Fayetteville Public Library, 401 W. Mountain St., Fayetteville, 72701.
A private memorial service will be held at a later date.
Cremation arrangements were under the direction of Beard’s Funeral Chapel.

Claude Hagen
SPRINGDALE — Claude Myron Hagen, 80, of Prescott Valley, Ariz., died June 6, 2009, in Prescott Valley. He was born in LaCrosse, Wis., to Cora and Melvin Hagen of Norway.
He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1948 to 1952 and carried the rank of staff sergeant. He was a longtime Whittier, Calif., resident before retiring and moving to Arkansas in 1990. In September 2008, he relocated to Prescott Valley. Claude took pleasure in telling a good story and an even better joke. He enjoyed soccer, playing and coaching it.
He is survived by his seven children, Chris of Prescott Valley, Donna of Olean, Mo., Vicki Benedict and Jim of Springdale, Ark., Lisa Langham, Scott and Dennis of Whittier, Calif.; 13 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; and fi ve great-great-grandchildren.
Burial was at Rose Hills on June 12 in Whittier, Calif. All will miss him dearly.

Leslie Woodward
WARRENSBURG, Mo. — Leslie Leonard “Woody” Woodward, 70, died Nov. 16, 2009, at the Warrensburg Manor Care Center. He was born May 4, 1939, in Springdale to Russell J. and Alliene Spencer Woodward.
He was a farmer and retired truck driver for the Jones Truck Lines in Springdale and Yellow Freight Trucking Co. in Kansas City, Mo. He served in the Navy, the Army Reserves and National Guard.
Survivors include his wife, Leona; a son, Michael Ross Woodward of West Fork; a daughter, Anne Marie Allen of Springdale; three grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; a brother, Billy Ray Woodward of Springdale; a sister, Rowena Grigg of Huntsville.
Visitation will be from 2 to 3 p.m. today at Hadley Funeral Home in Windsor, Mo.
Services will be at 3 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Laurel Oak Cemetery in Windsor.
Charles Warren
Lindsey
SPRINGDALE — Charles Warren Lindsey, 81 , of Springdale, died Wednesday, Nov. 11, 2009, at Regency Hospital in Springdale. He was born May 25, 1928 in Middlebrook, Ark., to Charles Edgar and Lora Bethel Johnson Lindsey.
Mr. Lindsey served in the Army during the Korean War. He received his B.S.A. from the University of Arkansas, and retired from Merck & Co. after 27 years as a farm research superintendent. He was a member of St. Thomas Episcopal Church and was a lay preacher for 40 years. He was a former member and president of the Jaycees in Dardanelle, and a life member of the Springdale Kiwanis Club where he also served as president. He married Peggy Lois Gordon on April 18, 1952, in Conway.
Survivors include his wife, Peggy Lindsey of the home; three children, Gordon Lindsey and wife Beth of Spring, Texas, Carolyn Polk and husband Tommy of Little Rock, Melinda Emmerling and husband Mark of Maumelle; four brothers, Jack Lindsey of St. Peters, Mo., Clarence Lindsey of St. Louis, Mo., Nelson Lindsey of Collinsville, Ill., Loran Lindsey of Loudon, Tenn.; a sister, Charlene Eversgerd of German Town, Ill.; and eight grandchildren, Heather Lindsey, Tyler Lindsey, Addison Lindsey, Blaise Lindsey, Laiken Lindsey, Taylor Larson, Christopher Emmerling and Madeleine Polk.
A celebration of life will be at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 22, at St. Thomas Episcopal Church with the Rev. Pamela Morgan oft ciating. Arrangements are with Heritage Funeral Home in Springdale, online guest book at heritageofnwa.com.
