Man Arrested After 29-Year-Old Woman Shot

Posted: November 19, 2009 at 4:14 a.m.

— A local man faces criminal charges after police say he shot a woman in the hip Tuesday night.

Julie Bolton, 29, was listed in critical condition at Washington Regional Medical Center on Wednesday, but a police spokesman said the injuries were not life-threatening.

Charles Nation, 21, of 4049 N. Johnelle Drive in Fayetteville was in connection with felony attempted murder, aggravated assault, possession of firearms by certain persons, endangering the welfare of a minor and committing a terrorist act.

Fayetteville police responded to a shooting at 5700 W. Fountain Street, off Wedington Drive, about 11:30 p.m. Tuesday. Officers found Bolton, who had been shot in the hip.

“We obtained the suspect’s name from a witness at the scene and identified him as Charles Nation,” said Fayetteville Police Sgt. Bill Phelan. “Apparently, he came to the residence to collect money owed him. I believe it was $120.”

Phelan said Bolton and her husband, 31-year-old Willie Bolton, along with their 5-year-old child, were in the home when Nation came to the door. Nation demanded money from the couple and an argument followed, police said. Nation reportedly reached into his pocket, prompting the couple to run inside and slam the door, according to police.

“The wife had her back to the door when [Nation] fired one round, striking her in the hip,” Phelan said. “Apparently, it didn’t hit any major organs, so it looks like she’s going to be OK.”

Officers found Nation near driving his home, located within the Crossover Terrace apartments off Arkansas 265, and pulled him over. He was arrested at the scene and transported to Washington County Detention Center, where he was being held without bond Wednesday evening. Nation told investigators the shooting was accidental, police said.

“He said he wasn’t trying to shoot anyone and that he was just trying to intimidate and scare them,” Phelan said.

Investigators searched Nation’s home and reportedly found a 9 mm handgun.
