MAJORITY IS DONE: Work Nearing Completion

VETERANS PARK IMPROVEMENTS ALMOST A YEAR BEHIND SCHEDULE

Posted: November 19, 2009 at 4:41 a.m.

— The much delayed Veterans Park improvement is expected to be completed by the end of the year.

Park and recreation commissioners were told Wednesday a majority of the work is done.

Improvement at Veterans Park was scheduled for completion Jan. 1, 2009, but the contractor, Bossler Construction, fi led for bankruptcy, leaving the bonding company, Travelers Casualty and Surety Co. holding the bag.

The $2.1 million renovation project stalled for several months until city offcials and Travelers worked out an arrangement for completion of the work. Multi-Craft Construction was hired to complete the renovation.

John Mack, an architect with JKJ Architects, and his partner Jim Meyer designed the improvement and have overseen the project for the city.

Mack said he is working with Multi-Craft on punch card items. “We are about 90 percent through with three sets of punch cards,” Mack said. “We have another meeting scheduled for ... Thursday for another walkthrough,” Mack said.

David Hook, the city’s facilities development manager, said electric work at the park is nearly complete.

Part of the delay after Multi-Craft took over the project was correcting mistakes made by the original contractor, Hook said.

Some electrical repair work is ongoing and the lockers in the officials’ dressing room haven’t been installed. All of the fencing is not complete and some handrails have to be redone, Hook said.

Mack told commissioners he planned to make sure the renovation is complete by Dec. 31.

“That’s the goal I’ve set and I’m trying to hold to that goal,” Mack said.

Rick Stocker, parks and recreation director, said completing punch card lists may continue into next year, but substantial completion of the renovation is expected by the end of the year.

Commissioners also discussed proposed improvement to Lake Atalanta and received an update on the city’s trail projects.

The Lake Atalanta project is expected to be a part of a likely 2011 bond issue.
