HUNTING

Deer As Pets Not Recommended

Posted: November 19, 2009 at 3:56 a.m.

You think it would be fun to have a pet deer? Maybe, for a while.

But the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission doesn’t recommend wildlife as pets, period.

They are legal, though, with some strong rules applying.

Deer that have been caught in the wild have to be kept in pens of adequate size with fencing at least 8 feet tall. Pet deer cannot be sold or transferred to a different owner.

They cannot be taken from Arkansas except with permission from the Game & Fish chief of wildlife management.

Deer cannot be brought into Arkansas without a wildlife importation permit from Game & Fish. Deer from a long list of other states are banned completely as a preventive measure against chronic wasting disease.

Missouri Holds Urban Deer Hunt JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - Hunters checked 1,242 deer during the urban portion of Missouri’s firearms deer season held Oct. 9-12.

Boone County in central Missouri led harvest totals with 247 deer checked, followed by St. Charles County near St. Louis with 160.

Greene County, which surrounds Springfield, was third with 139. The harvest consisted of 80 percent does.

The goal of urban hunting is to control deer populations in and around the St. Louis, Kansas City, Springfield and Columbia-Jefferson City areas. This is more difficult than in rural areas where hunting is more common.
