— The former manager of Benton County Water District No. 1 admitted Monday morning to stealing money from the utility.

Wayne Edward Allen, 47, of Garfield pleaded guilty to theft of property, a class B felony punishable with a prison sentence ranging from five to 20 years. He pleaded guilty under a plea agreement Alison Lee, his attorney, reached with Deputy Prosecutor Brandon Carter.

Allen was arrested June 22 as result of a investigation by Benton County Sheriff’s Office into missing money at the utility. The investigation centered on money that the water district received from the sale of old brass water meters.

Allen was accused of signing and cashing a $1,000 check that was described as an incentive pay. Allen wasn’t authorized by the water district board to receive the payment, according to court documents.

Circuit Judge Robin Green accepted the plea agreement and Allen’s guilty plea.

Allen was placed on five years’ state supervised probation, was given four days in the Benton County Jail, and must work 40 days in the Benton County work program.

Allen also must pay $1,420 in court-associated costs and $3,059.81 in victim restitution.

After his hearing, Allen was placed in the custody of Benton County Sheriff’s Office and taken to jail.
