Community College Celebrates International Culture Throughout Week

About a dozen students at NorthWest Arkansas Community College took the opportunity Monday to hear from native French speakers about their homelands — none of which happened to be France.
Five students — representing Gabon, Morocco and Burkina-Faso — spoke, highlighting various cultural traditions and the history of their native lands. The presentation was parts of “The Francofone Connection,” the first event of the NWACC International Education Week 2009, which features daily events and concludes with an international potluck dinner Friday evening.
Cindy King, a French and Humanities instructor at the college, organized the French-speaking roundtable. King told Monday’s group that after she began teaching in 1996, she was relieved the first time she stumbled upon native French speakers.
“For a while, I was kind of lonely, because I couldn’t find anybody who spoke French,” said King, describing the experience of happening upon two sisters from Gabon in the Student Center.
Today, international photographer and herbalist Stephen Foster will present a lecture in room 108 of the Student Center.
Fashion shows will be featured Wednesday and Thursday, and students will have the chance to learn about Kenya from NWACC’s Mary Odima, a native Kenyan who recently returned from a three-month teaching stint there.
Dale Montgomery, director of International Services, said that the annual week-long event was an opportunity to “show people the importance of international exchange.”
