Changes Coming For Lady Tigers

BENTONVILLE West Fork graduated all five starters from a year ago, but coach Nathan Wells believes the Lady Tigers can still be competitive in the tough 4A-4 Conference.
Wells acknowledged replacing Jordyn Ferrell’s 20-plus points per game will be tough, but this year’s team will be different, Wells said.
“The last few years she (Ferrell) was consistent,” Wells said. “If Jordyn had a great game, we did pretty well. She had to have a good game for us to win. It was kind of all our eggs were in one basket. We think we’ll be a little more diversified this year.”
The Lady Tigers will be led by junior point guard Sarah Sagely. Juniors Christy Fraley, Maddy McCorkle and Ragen Franklin will start along with 5-foot-8 forward Lakin Burnett, the lone senior.
“We’re gonna be a competitive team,” Wells said. “All these girls got meaningful minutes. We’re not void of experience.”
The Lady Tigers will try to make up for a lack of size with quickness, Wells said.
“We’ve got good athletic ability overall and we shoot the ball pretty well,” Wells said. “We’ve got to run the floor as fast as we can. We’re going to be a pressing, running team and get as many possessions as we can get.”
Sophomore Melissa Jones and junior Missy Worley should also see playing time.
“Jones, she’ll contribute a lot for us,” Wells said. “She’s got a lot of athletic ability.”
Wells tabbed Ozark as the favorite, with his team being among three or four others that could compete for the league title.
“We definitely feel we can compete with anybody in our league,” Wells said. “Ozark has the most talent of anybody. Then it’s Clarksville, us and Pottsville.”
West Fork struggled in a scrimmage against defending 3A state champion Charleston, but will play a benefit game at Huntsville on Saturday.
