BELLA VISTA A search committee for the Bella Vista Library Board of Trustees has hired a full-time librarian.
Joni Stine, a librarian at the University of Arkansas in Fort Smith, will start Dec. 14.
“We had an overwhelming response,” said Arlyn Engelken, chairman of the search committee.
Responses to the job opening came from about 30 people, some as far away as New York, Pennsylvania and Iowa.
Engelken summarized Stine’s qualities in two words: “professional and compassionate.”
Stine changed careers from working in education in kindergarten through grade 12 to earning her master’s degree in library science. She worked as a library director at Arkansas State University-Mountain Home, then as a librarian in Fort Smith.
She graduated summa cum laude from the library master’s program at the University of Missouri. Stine will be the only full-time employee.
Bella Vista Library Director Marianne Farner, who works three days a week, will remain in charge of the facility.
In addition to the director, the library has four other part-time employees, Farner said.
The search committee members believe Stine will work well with volunteers.
Much of the work at the library is done by volunteers, from running the check-out counter to shelving books. The volunteers worked 1,138 hours in October.
