— The Megan Herbert era is over at Shiloh Christian, likely not soon enough for the rest of the 4A-1 Conference.

When Herbert, now at Central Arkansas, last walked off the court for Shiloh, she did so as the state tournament’s Most Valuable Player after leading the Saints to the Class 4A state title in March.

The win capped an incredible 119-15 record over Herbert’s four seasons at Shiloh — including last season when the Lady Saints easily won the regular-season title, district title, regional title and finally the state championship.

This year, several teams are lined up to take their shot at the conference crown — most notably Huntsville and Prairie Grove — but don’t discount the Lady Saints quite yet.

“Shiloh lost a lot in their go-to player, but they’ve got a lot of players back,” said Prairie Grove coach Kevin Froud, whose Lady Tigers won a game at last season’s state tournament.

Prairie Grove finished last season 20-8 after a loss to Star City in the state quarterfinals, and it is already 2-0 this year after wins over Lincoln and Booneville. The Lady Tigers return several key players — including junior Kendra Coyle.

“I think if we play like we’re capable of, we could win the conference,” Froud said. “But if we have an off night, there’s a lot of teams that could come up and beat you.”

Huntsville also reached the state quarterfinals last season, one year after the Lady Eagles won the state title. Senior Martha Robinson returns as one of the top players in the conference this season, giving Huntsville a chance in any game.
