School Celebrates Veterans Day

‘THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE,’ OAKDALE STUDENT TELLS VETS

— Colette Brashears had a hard time thinking of nonholiday recognition of veterans when she sat down to write an essay for her English class, she said.

With some reflection, she came to a realization.

“We may not have celebrations for veterans every day, but keeping America’s present and future bright is a celebration of veterans,” Brashears said.

Brashears, 13, is an eighthgrader at Oakdale Middle School. She spoke Wednesday at the school’s annual Veterans Day ceremony. Before the ceremony, Brashears said she wanted to thank veterans.

“Thank you for your service,” she said. “Thank you for putting your life on the line.”

Sheyla Mireles, 14, wrote an essay about when people should honor veterans. She said she normally only thought about veterans on Veterans Day. Then she sat down to write.

“I just started crying,” she said.

Mireles, a cheerleader, decided hearing “The Star Spangled Banner” is a good reminder to think about the sacrifices veterans have made.

Eighth-grader Nestor Lemus, a violinist, helped play the national anthem at the ceremony. He said he would have veterans on his mind while he was playing.

“I’m going to think of all the veterans that fought for our country,” he said. “I know without them, America wouldn’t be what it is today. They were brave and strong and knew what to fi ght for.”

Wednesday was the 15th year Oakdale has held the ceremony, said Principal James Goodwin.

Ro ge rs M ayo r Steve Womack, a retired National Guard colonel, spoke at the event. He said he was impressed with the school’s patriotism.

“Your spirit gives us hope that your generation understands the genius of America,” he said.
