Effort Pleases Springdale High’s Person
RED PULLS AWAY FOR WIN IN SECOND HALF

SPRINGDALE Scotty Person didn’t want Springdale High to play perfect during its Red-White scrimmage on Tuesday night in Bulldog Gymnasium.
Instead, he wanted to see how his players would respond in different gamelike situationsand what kind of mistakes they’d make when running their various o◊enses and defenses.
What he found was pretty typical - a little good and a little bad.
The Red scored 23 secondhalf points and ran away with a 44-22 victory over the White in a game that featured Springdale High teachers as coaches for both teams.
Leading the Red was sophomore guard Gabby Lewis with 15 points, senior guard Bailey Ott with 10 andsenior forward Alex Light with seven. Ott scored seven of her 15 in the second half, including two 3-pointers.
“I didn’t want to be perfect (Tuesday),” Person said. “I don’t want to peak in November, and so we made enough mistakes that we’ll have plenty to work on, and that’s what we’re going to do.”
Person said the biggest thing the Lady Bulldogs are working on right now is tightening up various plays on o◊ense so that when the heart of their schedule comes around, they’ll be playing fundamentally sound.
“It’s all about the basics for us right now,” Person said. “I knew we’d be sloppy and that’s fi ne. We rebounded the ball well, we played good defense and knocked some free throws down, but as far as the X’s and O’s of things, we’re a little sloppy.
“I can promise you we haveenough to work on during practice throughout the next week that I’ll be earning my paycheck.”
Springdale, which won 14 games last season and earneda berth in the Class 7A State Tournament for the first time in Person’s four-year tenure, plays a benefi t game at Gentry at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
The Springdale High Bulldogs will also have their Red-White game at2:30 p.m. Saturday.
“We’ve got a chance to do some really good things this season; I really believe that,” Person said.
“I saw glimpses of that (Tuesday), so right now, it’s just a matter of keeping thata constant thing and not being so up and down.”
Before Tuesday’s Red-White game, Southwest and George Junior Highs also took part in team scrimmages in preparation for their upcoming seasons.
