— Physical education teacher Kathy Wormington has been named the 2009 recipient of the state’s Leadership in Fitness Award for physical education.

The award is given out annually by the Arkansas Governor’s Council on Fitness. The council honors a physical education teacher each year as one of the nine Leadership in Fitness Awards that it issues.

Wormington teaches at Hellstern Middle School. The award will be presented to her during a Friday ceremony at the Peabody Hotel in Little Rock.

“The purpose of the award is to recognize people in Arkansas who are making a difference in health and physical fitness,” Governor’s Council member Gina Marchese Pharise said.

Wormington has taught in the district for 12 years. She taught at Smith Elementary School and Helen Tyson Middle School before Hellstern opened in 2005.

“I’m real pleased,” Wormington said of receiving the award. “Most teachers do what they do because they like doing it, but it’s nice to be recognized.”

According to its Web site, arkansasfitness.com, the Governor’s Council on Fitness was first established in 1992 as the Governor’s Council on Fitness and Sports by then-Gov. Bill Clinton.
