Collection Exceeds 27 Tons

FAYETTEVILLE — Ever wonder who drinks enough beer and soft drinks in a month to add up to more than 27 tons of aluminum cans?
Fayetteville does.
Fayetteville recycling centers collected 54,258 pounds of aluminum in October. The tally is part of the city's participation in the Cans for Cash City Recycling Challenge, said Brian Pugh, Fayetteville's waste reduction coordinator. The contest was created by the U.S. Conference of Mayors and Novelis Corp.
Fayetteville is competing with other cities of similar size for up to $5,000 in awards to be used to support recycling efforts through local education and awareness programs.
"I won't know who won or what the amounts were until later," Pugh said. "We have until December to turn in the results."
Last year, the city collected 23.4 tons of aluminum and the year before that, 27.5 tons were brought in.
