Man Seeks Job Through Moving Message

— After two months of unemployment and more than 30 application snubs, 36-year-old Terry Evans is pinning his hopes for employment on his wheels.

In his case, that means a red Oldsmobile Intrigue.

Evans in recent days could be spotted driving or parked around Fayetteville, hoping resume-like information prominently displayed on his car will intrigue prospective employers.

“Everyone else advertises stuff on their cars. I thought ‘Why not advertise myself ?’”he said. “At this point, I’d do anything for a job.”

Though painting his contact information and job experience on the windows of his car has garnered some local attention, Evans had not received any employment offers as of Thursday afternoon.

“I’ve had a lot of looks from people but haven’t had any real bites yet,” he said. “The economy is hurting so bad right now - that’s all there is to it. I’m not being picky. I’ll take whatever I can get. I’ve already applied all over Bentonville, Springdale, Rogers and Fayetteville.”

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, Arkansas’ unemployment rate for September stood at 7.1 percent, which was up 1.2 percent compared with the same month last year. The national unemployment rate for September was 9.8 percent, compared with 3.6 percent in 2008.

Evans spent most of Wednesday and Thursday parked near the busy intersection of South School Avenue and 15th Street.

Phrases such as “Available Any Shift,” “Looking4Work” and “Dependable Driver,” were among the qualifications painted on his car.

The career-seeker, who plans to move to an intersection in Springdale today, said he’ll keep promoting himself for as long as it takes. His past job experience includes cooking, construction, mechanics and paving work.

“My best bet is to stay parked somewhere because gas is so expensive,” he said. “It’s also that time of the month when bills are due so I really have to be careful with my money. Hopefully, an opportunity comes along soon.”

Barbara Batson, University of Arkansas Career Center director, said she applauds Evans’ effort to set himself apart but wouldn’t recommend his approach to students seeking professional employment.
