BENTONVILLE The city has $7.5 million earmarked for construction of a community recreation center and park on 35 acres recently purchased near the southwest corner of Arkansas 12 and Arkansas 112.
And while the fi rst public drop-in event aimed at soliciting resident thoughts and ideas will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in the Wal-Mart Room at the Bentonville Public Library, 405 S. Main St., planners got their first inkling on Monday as to what amenities the community would like to see.
The city, architects and others held a series of meetings Monday, with the results of a resident survey conducted by Kansas Citybased Leisure Vision serving as the focus of attention. The agency compiled the results from nearly 400 resident surveys aimed at finding what amenities would most attract them to a community center.
More than 40 percent of those surveyed listed indoor swimming/aquatic center as a leading amenity. Thirty-five percent cited an indoor running/walking track, while 27 percent said weight room/cardiovascular equipment, and 24 percent suggested aerobics/fitness areas. Other high-ranking amenities included community rooms, gymnasiums, a children’s indoor playground and outdoor swimmingpools.
“The whole point of this is to begin to find out the best way to spend the initial $7.5 million on this community center,” Bentonville parks director David Wright said.
