— Driving in Fayetteville may sometimes feel like an obstacle course as motorists make their way between cones and barrels.

Government Avenue was closed to tra◊c Friday while crews worked to install new sidewalks, gutters and other improvements.

Other projects are substantially more involved.

The Mount Comfort Roadproject from Interstate 540 to Alpine Road is about half done, said Chris Brown, Fayetteville chief engineer.

“The other project from Alpine (Avenue) to Rupple (Road) is approximately 20 percent complete and will be done in fall 2010,” Brown said.

“The projects will create a more orderly flow of traffic near I-540 and will increase capacity of the street by widening to four lanes,” Brown added. Sidewalks and bicycle lanes will also be added.

The Mount Comfort Roadconstruction was budgeted at $11.6 million, however decreased construction costs have the project coming in closer to $10.5 million, Brown said. The project is part of the 2006 Transportation Bond program.

“The ‘lower prices’ that you hear about are the di◊erence between the estimates developed by planners and engineers and the actual price bid,” Brown said.

Adding street improvements to the list of transportation bond projects could happen once o◊cials have a clearer picture of construction costs.

“We don’t want to start moving things around until we know what things on the list will cost,” Don Marr,Fayetteville chief of staff, told the Fayetteville Street Committee in September.

Rolling Hills Drive is another big project nearing completion.

“That project is approximately 85 percent complete,” Brown said. Workers are scheduled to lay asphalt today. Striping will come the following week.
