Healthy democracy Our great nation, the United States of America, is based on some basic, self-evident truths that our forefathers saw as essential for the success of a Democratic country. One of these was the idea that every eligible citizen should be able to participate in the decision making process of passing bills and choosing who will represent their voice. In order for an active population to be possible, there must be provisions taken by the government to make laws and functions of government simple enough to be understood by the people. The founders of the United States exercised this in the drafting of our constitution. This document, which embodies the entire structure of our nation, is only seven articles long and has only 27 amendments. This is simple and can be studied and comprehended at an elementary level.
