The Post-9 /11 Veterans Educational Assistance Act of 2008 already funds many student expenses for veterans who have served since Sept. 11, 2001, but a national university with a local office is taking that work a step further. The University of Phoenix, which has its northwest Arkansas campus in Rogers, announced recently that it plans to participate in the Yellow Ribbon Program. The program allows degree-granting institutions of higher learning to voluntarily enter into an agreement with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs to fund tuition expenses that exceed the highest public instate undergraduate tuition rate. The institution can contribute up to 50 percent of those expenses, and the VA will match the same amount. The Post-9 /11 GI Bill pays up to the highest public instate undergraduate tuition and fees.
