UA track teams add talent

Posted: July 29, 2009 at 6:38 a.m.

— The Arkansas men's track and field program added a Fort Smith native to its roster and the women's team added an Illinois state champion to its program, it was announced this week.

The women's program added Regina George, a native of Chicago and graduate of St. Gregory High School. She was the Illinois state champion in the 200 meters this year. Fort Smith Southside standout Micah Washington, a champion high and triple jumper, will join the men's program.

"Our recruiting class for 2009-10 is one of our best ever," UA women's coach Lance Harter said. "We have found some young ladies with real potential. Regina George has volumes of talent and can become an All-American in her choice of events. She adds more depth to our sprints and middle distance crew and she has some great talent in the 800 meters. We may also use her in the high jump because, with a personal best of 5-10, she could score some points at the SEC level."

George holds personalbests of 25.08 in the 200 meters, 55.69 in the 400 meters, 2:10 in the 800 meters and 5-10 in the high jump. While competing for the Razorbacks, George will likely concentrate on the 800 meters with the potential to run on the relays.

Washington won the high jump (6-10 1/2) in the Arkansas Indoor State Championship this year as a senior at Southside.

"Micah Washington is a local guy who will bring a lot to our program," men's head coach Chris Bucknam said. "He's a tough competitor and will play an important role in our jumps crew. He shows a lot of potential in all three jumps and we are excited he's decided to join our program."

At the 2009 Arkansas Outdoor State Championships, he won the high jump (6-4), was bronze in the long jump (21-6) and won the triple jump (44-8 1/2).

He was named to the All-Arkansas track and field team in the high jump and the triple jump. In addition to his state titles, he was also the 2009 Arkansas Meet of Champs winner in the high jump and triple jump.
