Senate chief to act as governor 3 days

Posted: July 28, 2009 at 4:57 a.m.

— Senate President Pro Tempore Bob Johnson will serve as acting governor from this morning through Thursday afternoon if the governor's flights are on schedule, a spokesman for the governor's office said Monday.

Gov. Mike Beebe is set to leave this morning for a trip to Cuba to promote agricultural exports from Arkansas in the future and return on Thursday afternoon, Beebe spokesman Matt DeCample said.

Lt. Gov. Bill Halter was scheduled to leave late Monday to attend a National Lieutenant Governors Association meeting Wednesday through Friday in Baltimore, Md.

Johnson, D-Bigelow, said he won't be at the state Capitol while serving as acting governor.

"I'm busy," he said. "I have to earn a living."

Johnson said the governor's office has his cell phone number in case it needs to contact him. But he said he doesn't believe that any matters will arise that will require his action.

He said he hasn't previously served as acting governor.
