Profit down, Verizon to cut jobs

2nd-quarter earnings fell 21 percent; 8,000 to lose positions

Verizon Communications Inc., which jointly owns the nation's largest wireless carrier, said Monday its second-quarter profit fell 21 percent as cost-cutting in its wireline business failed to keep pace with falling revenue.
