LITTLE ROCK Nicolas Sarkozy's high-octane lifestyle just hit a speed bump. Since taking office in 2007, he has packed his agenda with whirlwind trips abroad and made speeches before every conceivable domestic constituency. He even found time to divorce his second wife, as well as court and marry his third, ex-supermodel-turned-singer Carla Bruni, 13 years his junior. Last weekend, however, Sarkozy, 54, collapsed while jogging in the summer heat - an episode that may prompt him to reconsider his intense schedule. He was jogging Sunday whenhe collapsed midrun and was whisked by helicopter to Paris' Valde-Grace military hospital. Doctors there kept him overnight for observation, releasing him Monday after exams showed no signs of a cardiac problem. Sarkozy's office said doctors had diagnosed him with "lipothymic" discomfort as a result of overexertion at high temperatures. They prescribed a few days' rest but no further medical treatment. Lipothymia is a medical term for feeling faint.
Actress Joanna Lumley of British comedy TV series Absolutely Fabulous was honored by Nepalese Prime Minister Madhav Kumar on Monday in Katmandu for her outspoken campaign to give thousands of Gurkha war veterans and their families the right to settle in Britain. Gurkhas have been serving as soldiers for the British for nearly 200 years, but Britain had limited their right to settle there, saying allowing in tens of thousands of veterans and their families would cost taxpayers billions. Lumley - who in the series playedPatsy, a chain-smoking magazine editor who slept her way to the top - became the face of their campaign. She said she was drawn to the cause because her father fought alongside Gurkha soldiers in World War II. In May, the British government agreed to allow thousands of Gurkhas the right to settle there. On Monday, Gurkha veterans honored Lumley at City Hall. "For my first visit to Nepal but not the last, it makes me so proud to know that I have been here accepted as the daughter of Nepal. Thank you for that," Lumley told the cheering crowd.
