Islands going in on College

Posted: July 28, 2009 at 6:46 a.m.

— Weather permitting, two islands will be built in the middle of College Avenue this week. Crews have begun digging the first in front of First Baptist Church of Fayetteville.

Between Dickson and Lafayette streets, two islands are being created within the center turn lane. They will be 80- and 100-feet long and spaced 250 feet apart. One is roughly in front of the church, and the second is in front of Marvin's IGA.

Space between the two islands will remain a center turn lane.

Trees will be planted inside the islands, Keith Shreve, assistant transportation manager, said. He wasn't sure if flowers or other plants will be added later.

Work should take one week, Shreve said.

The opportunity was taken Monday to run a camera into the sewer line beneath the street to inspect its condition. College Avenue improvements began in early June and should be finished late August.

Work from Rock to Maple streets includes replacing curb and sidewalk, the addition of lighting and trees, traffic light upgrades, and a complete street overlay.

Lane closures will continue during the last few weeks. The final step will be to repave, restripe and add crosswalks.

The number of lanes will not change, but the roadway is being widened in some areas. The radius of some intersections will be increased for easier turning.

The project is part of the Street Bond Program passed by voters in the 2006 sales tax bond election. Work is being performed by the city Transportation Division under the direction of the Engineering Division. The project was designed by McClelland Consulting Engineers.
