District soliciting proposals from architects for FHS plans
Posted: July 28, 2009 at 6:46 a.m.
FAYETTEVILLE The Fayetteville School District started advertising for architectural services on its planned new high school project, setting Aug. 7 as the deadline to submit "written qualifications and performance data."
In addition to advertising in newspapers, the district has also posted a copy on its Web site, www.fayar.net.
The ad calls for copies of the architect's statement of qualifications to be turned into school offices by 3 p.m. that day.
The district also asks applying firms to provide a variety of information:
◊A description of firm's current office size and personnel.
◊Prior experience conducting projects under Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design standards set by the U.S. Green Building Council.
◊Capacity and capability to perform the project.
◊Record of performance.
◊Specialized experience and technical competence.
◊Firm's familiarity with Fayetteville and proximity.
◊Proof of licensure and liability insurance.
◊Prior construction of large school projects.
◊A list of projects currently under contract.
At its regular meeting Thursday, the Fayetteville Board of Education voted 4-2 to reopen the architect selection process.
Previously, the board had been set tohire the firm Crafton Tull Sparks, which has worked on contracted district construction projects over the last four years. Board members who favored the change suggested that given the nature of the high school project, they should reopen the selection process to make sure they are hiring the best firms.
The board plans to have a committee review the applications submitted by the Aug. 7 deadline. From those applications, the committee will pick five finalists for the board to consider, and the school board will make the final selection.
Not all members of the committee have been set yet, but it is expected they will meet for the first time on Aug. 11.
Assistant Superintendent Dick Johnson said as of Monday afternoon, the only decided members of the committee were him, Superintendent Vicki Thomas, FHS Principal Jim Price and David Tate, director of school plant services.
Under a plan developed by the administration, the screening committee will include two high school teachers, three community members and a school board member.
"I spoke to Mr. Price today. He's going to pick the two faculty members," Johnson said.
The district has scheduled a millage vote for Sept. 15 on the high school project and is asking voters to approve a 4.9-mill property tax increase to fund it.
The board's plan involves redeveloping the south side of the campus with new academic facilities and five small learning communities. The property's Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard boundary would become the new face of the campus.
