ASU officials review response to weekend shooting

Posted: July 28, 2009 at 7 a.m.

— Arkansas State University officials will evaluate the school's emergency response to the Saturday shooting of a student at a campus apartment complex, an ASU vice chancellor said Monday.

The student, who was not named, was shot at 1:20 a.m. Saturday during a robbery attempt at the Collegiate Park Apartments on the north side of the ASU campus, police said.

The student was struck in the upper torso and was listed in good condition at a Jonesboro hospital Monday, Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Rick Stripling said.

Students were notified of the shooting by e-mail and text messaging services provided by the university, said ASU spokesman Gina Bowman. The alerts went out at 1:50 a.m. and at 2:24 a.m., Bowman said.

Police also posted information at the apartments, Stripling said.

The student told police he fought with two men who tried to rob him and was shot. The two fled after the shooting.

Police would not reveal what type of handgun was used in the shooting.

The suspects were described as a large black man wearing a red T-shirt and bluejeans and a thin black man wearing a white T-shirt and bluejeans. Both had dark-colored do-rags over their heads, police said.

The shooting was the third in three years on campus.

In February 2006, a woman was grazed by a bullet during a party at the ASU Pavilion. In February 2007, an ASU football player was injured when he was shot in the parking lot of the North Park Quads apartments on the campus.

"Anytime we have an incident, we will look at how we can add additional safety precautions," Stripling said.
