City's Web site adds 'Cone Patrol' link

Residents can check online for street closures, construction projects

— Fayetteville residents can now view a list of street closures and traffic delays before leaving their home.

The city's Web site features a new "Cone Patrol"link, which highlights current and future construction projects that affect traffic.

Though the site has only been up for a few weeks, Julie McQuade, Fayetteville neighborhood coordinator, said the link has already elicited positive feedback from the community.

"This is something that's been discussed for a few years," she said. "We had a lot of people calling different offices wanting to know about street closures and construction projects. This was a way for us to combine all the things that are being done by outside contractors and other divisions into one place."

McQuade said she, along with city information technology workers, transportation division employees and members of parking management, created the site through a joint partnership.

The page is updated each Friday when McQuade receives outside contractor permits from each division and from the parking office.

In addition to featuring project details, location and contact information, the site will eventually feature a Web feed residents can subscribe to, providing up-to-the minute information.

" That way they'll get notices for each new project as it's added," she said.

McQuade said construction is typically heavier during the summer months.

"I know that the city transportation department likes to get a lot done during the summer when students aregone and there's less traffic," she said. "That's why there are a lot of projects going on right now."

Other recent updates to the city's Web site include a directory of city staff and a sustainability blog.

"We're continuing to make improvements as we find other items," McQuade said. "Some project that we're discussing may be a bit more time consuming. We're working to make the city's Web site as user friendly as possible."
