Riding in a vehicle with the air conditioner on can be a quite comfortable ride on a hot summer day. With the vents blowing full blast across your face, even a 100-degree day is no sweat to endure. Keep in mind small children who may be your passengers, however, can be getting a little toasty in the back seat where the cool air is less likely to circulate.
Almost every week there are calls to assist with children locked in vehicles with the motor off, therefore providing no air conditioning to keep them cool. There was one lock-in call this week on Northwest A Street. To an adult, it's just a few seconds spent running back into the house for a forgotten item or a dash into an office or store. To a child strapped in a car seat, it can become a deadly oven in less than a few minutes. Even while the vehicle is running with the air on and blowing, there isn't a lot of air making its way to the back seat. With the newly designed car safety seats, even less air is able to cool the body of a properly strapped-in passenger.
Even after a short trip you've probably noticed the backs and heads of car-seat kids are sweaty. We need to have our children in a car seat, it's the law and the safest place they can be in an accident, but they still must be kept cool and comfortable.
Sunlight streaming through the windows, coupled with an already poor supply of cool air around a car seat, puts a child in a hot situation.Turn off the air for just a moment for a quick errand and heat stress could take its deadly toll.
Keep your small-fry passenger cool and comfortable this summer as the refreshing breezes of autumn are only days away.
