Alderman breaks leg in cycling mishap

FAYETTEVILLE Ward 4 Alderman Matthew Petty suffered a broken leg Monday in a cycling accident.
Petty was transported by ambulance Monday to Washington Regional Medical Center. He spent the night there and was released Tuesday.
Petty answered the phone Tuesday afternoon at home. He said he was riding his tricycle on a trail with his fiance to have dinner at Geraldi's, an Italian restaurant near downtown on South UniversityAvenue. They were having "what I thought was a fun little race," he said.
Exiting the trail near Center Street, Petty's chain jumped off the ring and caused the drive train to lock up, he said. The back axle ran over the lower part of his left leg.
Petty initially was told he may need surgery, but doctors later said he can recover by wearing a cast for three months.
Petty said he planned to watch the Tuesday evening City Council meeting on television from home and hopes to return to his regular meeting schedule in time to address a rezoning request for the Washington County Livestock Auction property.
