— 100 YEARS AGO Dec. 27, 1909

That the office of state superintendent of public instruction would be taken out of politics as far as possible, and to that end should be subject to the appointment of the governor, is the belief expressed by Prof. W.B. Torreyson, professor of secondary education in Arkansas. Prof. Torreyson yesterday stated that he believed the state superintendent should be appointed by the governor, and then that the superintendent should be given important influence, if not entire control.

50 YEARS AGO Dec. 27, 1959

A 1960 budget listing anticipated expenditures totaling $3,427,020 will be submitted to the North Little Rock City Council tomorrow at 7 p.m. The total sum is about $200,000 more than last year’s budget request, but almost $1 million less than the amount originally asked by the city’s various department heads.

25 YEARS AGO Dec. 27, 1984 HOT SPRINGS - After legal setbacks last week, the Hot Springs Advertising and Tourist Promotion Commission on Wednesday unanimously reaffirmed its support of a 1982 City Council decision to aid financially troubled Magic Springs Amusement Park. The commission instructed Carl Crow, city attorney, to prepare to defend the city’s action against a class action suit brought by a local motel owner.

The cost of prescription drugs for the elderly has emerged as a major issue in the 4th Congressional District race, and the candidates all seem to agree that the drugs cost too much and something should be done about it.Bruce Harris of Pine Bluff, one of four Democratic contenders, recently used a congressional study on prescription drug prices conducted by the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Government Reform as the basis of his own study.
