ENTERTAINMENT NOTES: Guild kicks off season with ASO Brass Quintet

— The Hot Springs/Hot Springs Village Symphony Guild will open its 2010 winter/spring season with a performance by the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra Brass Quintet - Carl Mason and Richard Jorgensen, trumpets; Michael Underwood, trombone; Ed Owen, tuba; and David Renfro, horn. The program will begin at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 26 at the Woodlands Auditorium, Ponce de Leon Center, DeSoto Boulevard and Balboa Drive, Hot Springs Village. Tickets are $10.

Feb. 16, 3:30 p.m.: Salon Concert, Harding College musicians play chamber music. $10

Feb. 27, 6 p.m., Coronado Center, Hot Springs Village: “Two Tenors & Two Misses,” dinner cabaret, featuring tenors Kenny McKay and Dan Utter and McKay’s two daughters. $20

April 1, 7:30 p.m.: John Puckett Jazz Trio. $10

May 16, 3 p.m.: Arkansas Symphony Youth Orchestras. Free

History walks

The Arkansas Historic Preservation Program’s “Walks Through History” and “Sandwiching in History” tours will visit historic properties across the state during 2010.

The schedule for the “Walks Through History,” free guided walking tours of historic structures and districts across Arkansas, 11 a.m. Saturdays:

March 13: Pocahontas Commercial Historic District, co-sponsored by Five Rivers Historic Preservation Inc., and the Randolph County Tourism Association

April 17: Fordyce-Ricks House Historic District, Hot Springs, co-sponsored by the Garland County Historical Society

May 15: Wynne Commercial Historic District, co-sponsored by the Cross County Historical Society

June 12: Mammoth Spring Dam and Lake, co-sponsored by Mammoth Spring State Park and the Mammoth Spring Chamber of Commerce

July 17: Historic Pangburn, co-sponsored by the White County Historical Society

Aug. 14: Rector Commercial Historic District, cosponsored by Rector Downtown Central

Sept. 18: DeWitt Commercial Historic District, co-sponsored by the Grand Prairie Historical Society

Nov. 13: Shaheen-Goodfellow Weekend Cottage (“Stoneflower”), co-sponsored by the Cleburne County Historical Society

The “Sandwiching in History” tour series targets Pulaski County structures and sites and includes a brief lecture and tour of the subject property. Each tour starts at noon on Fridays; participants are encouraged to bring lunches with them. The schedule:

Competition continues

Productions from the University of Central Arkansas and the University of Arkansas-Fort Smith will be among the six shows receiving invitations from the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival, Region VI (colleges and universities in Arkansas, Louisiana, Missouri, Oklahoma, Texas and New Mexico), Feb. 23-27 at Amarillo College in Amarillo, Texas.

UCA is sending its production of Machinal by Sophie Treadwell; UA-Fort Smith will be putting on its production of Awake and Sing! by Clifford Odets. Both performances will take place Feb. 27.

The shows emerged as top choices at the state festival held in November at Arkansas State University-Beebe.

Also sending productions to Amarillo are Midwestern State University (Texas); Sam Houston State University; University of Louisiana-Lafayette; and Southeastern Louisiana University.

The regional festival winner will receive an all-expenses-paid trip for its cast and crew to the National Festival in April at the Kennedy Center in Washington.
