Down or decorative?

DOWN

Cost: Yes, a good down comforter can be expensive.

But, whereas a typical decorative comforter lasts five to seven years, a down comforter can last a lifetime, says Karyn Maynard of Bed Bath & Beyond.

Allergens: Although fiberfill down-alternative comforters are available for those who are allergic to down comforters, the best down comforters are odor- and allergy-free, washed many times to get the dirt out of them, Maynard adds.

Breathability: A down comforter’s natural fibers keep “you warm in the winter and cool in the summer,” she points out, adding that people often become overheated sleeping under their decorative comforters.

DECORATIVE

Cost: Decorative comforters are often lower-priced, “allowing ... for more decorating flexibility,” says Melissa M.

Carrington of Croscill Home.

And there’s no need to spend even more money on a duvet cover.

Versatility: It’s often possible to get a number of coordinating accessories for a decorative comforter, whereas you’re much less likely to find them for a down comforter, says Jim Johnson of Dillard’s.

Allergens: Decorative comforters are free of anything that can cause or aggravate allergies, the two point out.
