— 100 YEARS AGO Dec. 24, 1909

General Passenger Agent Geo. H. Lee of the Rock Island will return this afternoon from St. Louis, where he has been completing arrangements for quarters for the new general passenger office, which he will open there January 1. The appointment of the assistant general passenger agent for the Choctaw District with headquarters here, and a number of other changes are expected to follow the return of Mr. Lee to Little Rock.

50 YEARS AGO Dec. 24, 1959

Postmaster I.C. Bellville said today that the Little Rock Post Office had a record this Christmas season, handling 13 percent more mail of all classes between December 1 and December 23, compared with last year. The postmaster noted that the national prediction is for a 5 percent increase in all classes of mail handled in the Christmas season. The mail count totaled 19,486,782 of all different classes this year compared with 17,242,549 in the same categories and in the same period last year.

25 YEARS AGO Dec. 24, 1984

Allstate Insurance Co. last week donated a small, camera-sized device to the North Little Rock Fire Department that will assist and maybe save the lives of firefighters. The $500 hand-held device, called a “Sniffer,” is capable of sensing, for seven days after a fire, the presence of petroleum derivatives used in arsons.

10 YEARS AGO Dec. 24, 1999 BENTONVILLE - This year about 2,500 people have contacted Bentonville based First Call for Help for assistance with financial problems or to access support groups, shelter, food and education. First Call provides free, centralized information and referral services to people in Northwest Arkansas. This late into the Christmas season, people are still looking for help with Christmas food and toys but needs are great in other areas as well, said Shannon Paul, information and referral manager.
