— 100 YEARS AGO Dec. 23, 1909

Shreveport, La., Dec. 22 - That a natural gas line is to be built to Little Rock and other Arkansas cities was evidenced here by the filing of a mortgage for $2,750,000 by the Arkansas Natural Gas Company, a corporation organized under the laws of Delaware and domiciled at Pittsburgh, Pa. The mortgage calls for an issue of 6 percent gold bonds and is executed in favor of the Colonial Trust Company of Pittsburgh, which is promised as security for all the trunk gas pipe lines about to be constructed by this gas company, from the Caddo field to the Arkansas cities and all the oil and gas leases and properties now held by the company.

50 YEARS AGO Dec. 23, 1959

WASHINGTON - The Little Rock Veterans Administration Regional office will be allocated $2 million soon. The money will be used for the VA direct housing loan program in Arkansas. In the Little Rock state office there was a backlog of 1,073 applications for the direct loans. The local office will soon begin making the direct loans as long as the money lasts.

25 YEARS AGO Dec. 23, 1984

Rainy weather has postponed any more of the court-ordered cleanup of the Vertac Inc. plant in Jacksonville until spring, a federal Environmental Protection Agency spokesman said recently. The 92-acre site is one of Arkansas’ seven Superfund sites. Karen Brown, a spokesman for the EPA’s regional office in Dallas, said last week that some cleanup work has been completed in Jacksonville and work will resume this spring.

10 YEARS AGO Dec. 23, 1999

Three days after the Little Rock Board of Directors approved higher water rates for its customers outside the city, causing North Little Rock to threaten to refuse payment, county and city officials are to meet today in an effort to settle their differences out of court. Pulaski County Judge Buddy Villines, North Little Rock Mayor Patrick Henry Hays and Little Rock Mayor Jim Dailey are among those called by Joe T. Ford to discuss the issue. Ford is president and chief executive of Alltel Corp. and incoming president of the Greater Little Rock Chamber of Commerce.
