Stacy’s On The Square Closes

DOWNTOWN RESTAURANT ONLY IN OPERATION FOR FIVE MONTHS

— Stacy’s on the Square has closed five months after opening its doors for business.

The downtown restaurant — owned by Wayne and Stacy Crooks — took over the space at 102 E. Central Ave. in July.

Numerous calls on Monday to Wayne and Stacy Crooks were not returned.

Stacy’s on the Square featured a variety of coffees, teas, sandwiches and New York-style hot dogs. It is the second restaurant to close in the space on the southeast corner of Central Avenue and Main Street. The first, Java on the Square, opened in November 2006 and closed in April.

“There was no advance notice” that Stacy’s was closing,” said Johnny Haney, who owns the property.

Haney said he has owned the space for 20 or so years. It housed a law office before Java on the Square.

Haney said the Crooks had time left on their original lease, but he declined to say how much time.

Stacy’s on the Square had paid $94.64 this year in city restaurant tax, which is levied at 1 percent of sales. The latest payment received by the Bentonville Advertising and Promotion Commission was for September taxes in the amount of $54.56. As of a Dec. 7 report, taxes for the months of August and October were unpaid.

With Stacy’s on the Square closed, the downtown area is left with two restaurants, Station Cafe and Table Mesa Bistro.

Both restaurants have fared better than Stacy’s on the Square based on taxes paid. Through October, Table Mesa Bistro had paid $5,928 in restaurant taxes while Station Cafe had paid $4,556.

Those amounts put both restaurants in the upper half of restaurant tax collections in Bentonville.
