Mistletoe and holly came on to the market for the holidays yesterday. Monday a dollar could not have bought the smallest sprig of mistletoe in Little Rock. Yesterday there were few doors along West Fifth Street not decorated with either holly or mistletoe or both. The white-berried vine may be bought in some places at 50 cents the armful, or in wreaths for 25 cents each.

50 YEARS AGO Dec. 22, 1959

WASHINGTON - A new education report shows Arkansas schools have the highest teacher turnover in the nation. The report is an annual analysis by the National Education Association. It said the turnover rate will be 19.9 percent in the 1959-1960 school year. The national average turnover rate is 8.5 percent. It was figured that 2,900 Arkansas classroom teachers will quit their jobs in this school year. This compares with 2,800 last year.

25 YEARS AGO Dec. 22, 1984

Water commissions from Little Rock, NorthLittle Rock, and Jacksonville agreed Friday to participate in a joint planning and development effort to meet future water needs for the Little Rock metropolitan area. The commissions formed the Central Arkansas Cities Water Planning Compact. The compact will develop a water supply plan for the three cities and others in this area who choose to join. The compact is an extension of the mutual relationship that already exists between the three cities, all of whom use the same reservoirs.

10 YEARS AGO Dec. 22, 1999

Less than 24 hours after the Little Rock Board of Directors approved a water rate increase for its customers outside the city, North Little Rock drafted a resolution to “explore every alternative to the payment of the increased rate.” In a special meeting Tuesday, the North Little Rock Water Commission voted to support the resolution, which will come before the City Council at its meeting Tuesday. Little Rock increased North Little Rock’s annual bill from $4.4 million to $6.1 million in a 8-3 vote that followed three hours of debate Monday night. It is the first rate increase since 1985.
