Estate tax’s extension hits wall in Senate

Levy heads for year’s pause, would revive at steep rate

Congressional efforts to extend the estate tax at its current 45 percent rate collapsed Wednesday, paving the way for a one-year suspension of the levy on multimillion-dollar estates.
