The nation’s dollar stores appear poised for a profitable Christmas after steadily gaining new shoppers during the recession.
Small-box retailers are focusing on toys, trimmings and treats to lure customers seeking to do Christmas on a tighter budget. While many store chains continue to report declining year-overyear sales, the major dollar stores have reported positive results, sometimes sharply higher.
“People are looking for value this holiday season and we’re happy to provide it to them,” said Josh Braverman, spokesman for Family Dollar Stores Inc. of Matthews, N.C. The company operates 6,665 stores in 44 states, including 101 in Arkansas.
