I-540 wrecks prompt action

A crash analysis of a section of Interstate 540 north of the Bobby Hopper Tunnel in Washington County shows improvements are needed to stem accidents, the Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department said.

“The analysis showed a high rate of wet-surface condition crashes” on the 3.5-mile section between the tunnel and the Winslow interchange in both the northbound and southbound lanes, indicating that a safety improvement is warranted,” thedepartment said in a minute order approved Wednesday by the state Highway Commission.

The analysis examined 92 crashes - one included a fatality - between Jan. 1, 2006, and Dec. 31, 2008. Wet or icy conditions were a factor in 77 of those wrecks, or nearly 84 percent. During the same period, wet or ...
