HP cancels 2-week employee break

— Hewlett- Packard Co. is canceling its two-week Christmas break for some U.S. sales employees because they need to spend the time closing deals, according to an internal e-mail.

“This is a business critical decision, one that was not made lightly” Randy Seidl, head of Americas sales for the enterprise storage, server and networking group, said in the Dec. 4 e-mail. “Our current competitive situation and our goal to increase market share and exceed our Aspire goal for Q1 make this action a business necessity.”

Hewlett-Packard, the world’s largest personal-computer maker, said in a statement that employees in the unit will continue to work over the Christmas break.

“This is consistent withan overall H-P policy, which indicates that each business can determine what coverage they need during the holiday period and staff accordingly,” the company said.
