2008 Mayoral Candidate Dies At 65

JENKINS WAS ONE OF SIX WHO VIED FOR POSITION

Saturday, December 5, 2009

— Nancy Deason Jenkins, a candidate in the 2008 Springdale mayor’s race, died Thursday evening.

Jenkins, 65, was one of six candidates who ran for the position last year after Mayor Jerre Van Hoose decided not to seek re-election. She finished in third place in the primary behind Doug Sprouse and Alderman Mike Overton. Sprouse was elected mayor in the runoff election.

Rex Bailey, a Springdale barbershop owner, said he first met Jenkins when she came into his shop one day while campaigning for mayor. He described her as a kind and caring individual.

“We became real good friends,” he said.

Ward 1 Alderman Kathy Jaycox said Jenkins believed strongly in Springdale.

“Nancy was one of the most passionate people about Springdale’s future that I have met in a long time,” Jaycox said. “That passion will be sorely missed. ... I ran into her about four weeks ago and we talked then.”

Jenkins was married to Dr. Travis Jenkins, a psychiatrist and retired chief medical officer for Ozark Guidance in Springdale.

“I was sorry to hear of Nancy’s passing,” Sprouse said. “Sandy and I are praying for God’s peace and comfort for Travis and the family as they go through this difficult time.”

Funeral arrangements are pending with Sisco Funeral Chapel in Springdale.
