President Barack Obama’s military and diplomatic team on Wednesday defended his decision to send 30,000 more U.S. troops to Afghanistan, telling lawmakers that the escalation is needed to prevent a Taliban takeover of the country, which could provide a sanctuary for al-Qaida.
