Retailers sense new thriftiness in aisles

Year-over-year sales at stores show frugality of consumers

When Wal-Mart Stores Inc. reported second-quarter earnings this month that exceeded expectations, the company's top officer, Mike Duke, also cited a "new normal" of shoppers spending less and saving more, which trimmed sales.
