Deficit, debt to test Obama tax pledge
Advisers see tough choices ahead

During last year's presidential campaign, President Barack Obama vowed to enact an agenda without raising taxes on the middle class, a pledge that budget experts viewed with skepticism. Since then, a severe recession, deficits and a national debt that is swelling toward a 50-year high have made his promise harder to keep.
