Taiwan irks China over Dalai Lama

Tibet's spiritual leader set to visit typhoon victims; Beijing objects

Taiwan's President Ma Ying-jeou shakes hands with soldiers working Thursday in the village of Hsinkai, which saw flooding and mudslides when Typhoon Morakot hit Taiwan.

China on Thursday denounced Taiwanese President Ma Ying-jeou's decision to allow the Dalai Lama to visit the self-ruled island, casting a shadow over rapidly improving relations between Taipei and Beijing.
