Cox, Eibner among top prospects in Cape Cod

FAYETTEVILLE — Razorback baseball players Zack Cox and Brett Eibner were named two of the top prospects in the prestigious Cape Cod League by PGcrosschecker.com, it was announced on Thursday.

Cox was the No. 6 prospect in the league, while Eibner ranked 18th on the website's list of top 100 players. The Arkansas duo were just one of three schools to have multiple players ranked among the league's top 20 prospects with SEC rival Georgia (5, 7, 14) and national runnerup Texas (3, 13) also placing multiple players among Cape Cod's top prospects.

Playing for the Cotuit Kettleers, Cox was a force at the plate once he joined his summer league team after Arkansas' run at the NCAA College World Series. He batted .344 over 23 games and was 25 plate appearances shy of qualifying for the league batting title where he would have ranked second. Playing mostly third base, Cox also spent time at shortstop and second base and was the Cape Cod League West All-Star Team's Most Valuable Player after he went 2-2 with two runs scored and a RBI in a rain-shortened game.

Last season as a true freshman, Cox set Arkansas' single-season home run record by a freshman when he blasted 13 home runs and overall hit .266. He also pitched for the Razorbacks, earning a 5-1 record with a 4.82 ERA.

Eibner spent his second summer in the Cape Cod League with the Wareham Gatemen and after playing predominantly outfield his first summer, spent some time on the pitcher's mound and at first base in 2009. He batted .240 overall and hit three home runs. On the mound he was 1-0 with a 2.19 ERA. Eibner was also asked to participate in the Cape Cod League All-Star Game Home Run Derby where he hit a towering home run over the legendary Green Monster at Boston's Fenway Park.

During the 2009 season, Eibner hit two of the most dramatic home runs on the year when he hit a gametying shot against Oklahoma during the regular season and then crushed a 1-0 pitch into the left-field bleachers at Rosenblatt Stadium in an instant classic against Virginia at the College World Series. Eibner was also Arkansas' Saturday starter and went 5-5 on the hill with a 5.00 ERA.
